FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

JUNE 2008

Our meet was held in Gretna Saturday the 24th of May. Our pre‐registration had all tables reserved, 46 in total. We were fortunate to enjoy the Crescent City S Gaugers with their 20 x 25 ft. layout which the public enjoyed. Thanks to Jay Mellon and his group.

A late addition but no less welcome was provided by Pepe Lafourcade and his guest Gordon Payne. The layout was 10 x 20 and had a plethora of 2 rail "O" scale and 3 rail semi scale trains running. Some of you might know Gordon as a published and accomplished "O" scaler who sponsored the "O" scale convention here several years ago. Pepe is a new member but a very ambitious operator of a high rail layout with 72" and greater radii curves on a quickly developing layout in his garage.

Our advertising was mainly brochures provided by Clay Fourrier which were placed in each of the hobby shops in the greater NOLA area. We supplemented these with ground signs at various places in Metairie and Gretna. The signs were arranged and contracted by member Richard Kater. A brief article appeared in the Times Picayune on Thursday 22nd and many radio plugs were given by Spud Mc Connel of WWL and Mike Costello of WTIX fm. The public turnout was excellent with 178 paid adults and at least 76 kids who each received a train whistle.

We had vendors/members from Texas and Mississippi and received major support from Mike Sciavicco of Mike’s Trains in Kenner and the writer of S & W Parts Supply in Metairie.

I would like to thank several persons without which we couldn't have had as successful a meet as we did.

1) Wynne Friedrichs rebuilt and transported the "Mighty Switching Complex" which was operated all day

by Mort Kelly. Wynne also arranged the purchase of the whistles.

2) Cliff Tonguis rewired and cleaned and transported the Busy Bee layout to the show.

3) Joe Wrubleski helped setup and breakdown.

4) A.L. Levy and Richard Kater, Dick Mitchell and Jim Liverett all spent a great deal of time on the registration desk and sold many raffle tickets.

5) Paul Gipson helped setup and was tenacious staying until my last box was packed and loaded at 7 pm

6) My wife Shirleen arranged the layout of tables and made the scale drawings for all to see.

7) Chip Mann provided all my supplies and incidentals needed to run the show.

Our display contests had winners Mike Sciavicco, Rick Van Egmond, Phil Vedros and Best of Show to Dick Mitchell.

We've received many good comments with thanks for holding the show.

The next TCA Louisiana Chapter Meeting will be held at the facilities of the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders on Saturday, June 28th. This will be a combination meeting, road trip and operating layout day! The club will be running layouts in N Scale, HO, O Gauge and G Gauge. We also hope to have the club's live steamers running on their layout. Rides on the 3:00 PM excursion of the Old Hickory Railroad will be available. For more information about the club and how to get there, go to the website: http://www.dovetailstudio.com/trains/. The trip from Baton Rouge is approximately 45 minutes. I suggest we arrive at the Jackson clubhouse around 11:00 AM. Lunch would be around noon‐ish and the TCA meeting would be around 1:30 PM. (This allows for those who wish to ride the Old Hickory Railroad at 3:00 PM to do so.) Since the club will be providing lunch we really need RSVP’s from anyone who is planning to come. Please contact Clay Fourrier at either trains@dovetailstudio.com or 225‐293‐6088.

I'll be traveling for much of June and July celebrating my retirement starting with the TCA convention in

Vermont.

Happy railroading!

Bill Harrison
